About

An Independent Reader's Project

Ancient China Wonder exists because of a gap. The Chinese zhiguai tradition — two thousand years of ghosts, fox spirits, immortals, dragons and wonders — is one of the great fantasy literatures of the world. But outside the Chinese language it exists mostly as scattered translations: a story here, an anthology there, with no map connecting them.

This site is an attempt at the map. It does three things that, as far as we know, no one else does together: it translates the stories from the public-domain originals; it builds the worldview they share — the realms, beings and rules — into a proper encyclopedia; and it writes the long essays that trace how the universe evolved. Every entry is cross-linked to the others, because the point is the connections.

Principles

  • Original translations. Every rendering is made from the classical Chinese text and from nothing else. We do not adapt existing English translations.
  • Public domain only. All source texts are centuries old. No modern scholarly apparatus, no living authors' work, is used without permission.
  • Notes are original work. The cultural notes, encyclopedia entries and essays are written for this site, and are as important as the translations.
  • No tracking. No advertising cookies, no analytics beacons, no accounts. See the privacy policy.
  • Independent. This is a hobbyist site, not an academic institution, a publisher, or a government body.

A note on method

Illustrations on this site are generated by AI in a unified ink-wash style and are always labelled as such. Translations condense the longest tales, and say so when they do. Errors, when found, are corrected publicly — the translation policy explains the working rules in detail.
